What’s the catch?
No catch. ESO would sooner pay consumers to dial down consumption than incur the cost of firing up additional generational assets, which would typically involve the use of fossil fuels.
How much could I earn and how is it calculated?
Last year, every client who participated in the scheme received a minimum £2 p/kwh. This was calculated using their previous average consumption for the period(s) in question.
Is there any commitment?
No, we will highlight when the windows are released (usually around 24 hours in advance) and taking part is always entirely optional. You don’t even need to indicate your intention or otherwise to take part.
What happens if my usage during the designated period(s) doesn’t decrease or indeed increases?
There is no penalty and as such, whilst you naturally wouldn’t get paid, your position around energy would be entirely unaffected.
How many windows are there?
This is yet to be determined but there were multiple periods across last Winter, typically during periods of high national demand and/or low generation. The periods in question are typically for one hour.
How do I know how much I have earned and when do I get paid?
We will send you statements retrospectively to update you on progress. At the end of the scheme the accrued balance will be paid to you (Expected to be around April 24)
